Through the Mind's EyesA group of young people from the Experience in Mind project have written and produced three innovative and enlightening short films which explore young people’s experiences of mental health. A showcase of these films, ‘Through the Mind’s Eyes’, will be shown as a free community event on Thursday 26th March 2009 from 6.00 – 7.00pm at the Duke of York’s Cinema, Preston Circus, Brighton.
The showcase represents the ongoing work to raise awareness about young people’s mental health. Experience in Mind volunteers aged 16 – 25 use their own experiences to raise awareness about young people’s mental health through delivering training to schools, colleges and professionals, and by creative exhibitions in the community.
Young people tell it like it is about mental health………
“We had an exhibition of the volunteers’ photography in the Jubilee Library in October 2008 and were overwhelmed with the positive comments and support from the local community who identified with the images messages. One in Four people will experience a mental health problem, yet there is still a lot of stigma and shame attached to these issues” Sam Taylor, Experience in Mind Coordinator.
The films, titled ‘Through the Mind’s Eyes’, portray a unique journey through depression, self harm and psychosis, from a young person perspective. It is hoped this free event will continue the necessary work in challenging stereotypes and opening up dialogue about experiences that are so often hidden.
“We, as young volunteers, have experienced such a diverse range of mental health issues which has impacted on our lives in various ways. These films depict these experiences to enable others to understand and relate to the issues that we go though and hopefully ease the stigma and prejudices related to young people’s mental health.” Sam Thomas, Experience in Mind Volunteer.
This is an open and free event and all are welcome over the age of 16.
Experience in Mind is run in partnership between Hove YMCA and Mind in Brighton & Hove, and is a Vinvolved project, which is part of V's National Youth Volunteering programme.
There will be a celebration afterwards upstairs at Circus Circus directly over the road from
the cinema 7.00 – 9.30pm (RSVP please if you would like to come to Circus Circus)
