Hove YMCA Worker With Gambian SchoolchildrenA team of volunteers led by Hove YMCA are going to Gambia in October 2008. Their mission is to help people in the Serekunda region of Gambia, West Africa. Hove YMCA made a similar trip a few years ago to help improve the living situations there and have decided to go back and help some more.
Gambia is the 56th poorest country in the world and we just want to do our bit to make poverty history!
Whilst in Gambia, a team of young people and staff from Cedar Centre School, along with volunteers from Hove YMCA, will be delivering a range of sporting activities in 3 primary schools in the Serekunda region. We will also be providing teaching resources so that the schools can continue these programmes in the future.
The team will be involved in delivering sports leader’s skills and will assist in sessions including Football, Cricket and Dance for secondary level and playground games and fun activities for primary children.

A range of equipment, sports clothing and session plans will be left there so that the schools are able to continue with these activities in the future. We hope this will be a positive addition to the curriculum for the Gambian children.
Funding for the trip was raised from Hove YMCA, The Gareth Stacey Fund, donations from members of public, The Osbourne Trust, Chiropractic for Life, a quiz night and stalls at a fete.
The Hove YMCA staff going on the trip are me, Yolandi Taylor - Sports Development Manager, Lucy Kinloch - Sports Apprentice, Laura Dixon - Sports Sessional Worker and Yas Robinson - Sports Volunteer.
