The Inner Journery ProjectThe Inner Journey Project to South Africa in June 2008 will take a group of 10 young people on an ‘outer journey’ of learning and adventure and ‘inner journey’ of self discovery in one of the world’s most diverse countries. The group will undertake a number of life -changing challenges and experiences. Hove YMCA is currently raising money to help each young person participate, please read on to find out more about the project and how you can help.
The Inner Journey Project...
Young people who previously took part in this project have shown
significant improvements in confidence and self esteem and have gone on
to live successful and independent lives.
“This Project showed me
that it is important for people to know that there is a softer side to
all of us and that we should not always try to be so tough on the
outside. This must be the beginning of my inner journey” (expedition
member 2007)
The 2008 group will get to experience some incredible life-changing events including:
- Wilderness trail: A 5 day trip into the Limpopo game reserve with young people from Sakithemba YMCA in Durban.
- Youth Justice Project: Discussion groups and workshops with Sakithemba YMCA whose young people have all come from prison.
- Ethembeni Children’s Centre visit: A centre for orphans with HIV and AIDS related illnesses. The purpose of the visit is to spend some time with the children undertaking art projects and other recreational activities
- Environmental Project: Undertake conservation projects with local school children, including Alien Plant Eradication and Veld Management, animal dissection and Anatomy study, Animal and Bird Behaviour & Identification
- Cultural Visits: Visits to Shaka Land cultural village, a traditional Zulu village, Drakensberg Mountains, San Bushman Cave Art and Zingela Bush Camp
- Fun Adventure Day: Abseiling, white water rafting, zip slide, Bush Game tracking Skills.
- Football: The international language of football is alive and well! We intend to raise enough funds to take football kits and equipment with us to have a tournament with local young people
