He is pictured here with Phathi, youth worker, during the summer ParkSafe project but has volunteered in all sorts of different youth and sports activities.

 

 

Interview with John


Haeji: What are you going to do today?
John: Today is the youth club so I will be preparing for that.

Haeji: What do you do outside of Hove YMCA?
John: Football, bowling and swimming.

Haeji: How did you first get involved with Hove YMCA?
John: I found out about it from someone who was already working as a volunteer and joined the team.

Haeji: What’s the best thing about volunteering?
John: Joining in with the children and adults.

Haeji: What’s the most fun bit about volunteering?
John: Everything happens in the youth club!

Haeji: What’s the most important thing you’ve learnt from volunteering?
John: Team work.

Haeji: What are you looking forward to doing next?
John: I hope to become a member of staff here.

Haeji: Do you think you’ve gained any skills/learnt new things in any way?
John: Team work, time management and becoming more calm.

Haeji: How would you sum up your volunteering experience in 3 words?
John: Fantastic team work!


Interview with Hannah Fuller, Line Manager


Haeji: What & where is the service you provide?
Hannah: Hove YMCA Youth Club, Marmion Road, Hove.

Haeji: How long has John been working for your service?
Hannah: Five years.

Haeji: What work does John do?
Hannah: He helps with setting up the youth club and running a variety of activities including cookery, arts and crafts,b running tournaments and sports activities. He also helps with the development of young people who attend the youth club.

Haeji: How has John contributed to your service?
Hannah: He is always dedicated and willing to take on any challenge. He is very reliable and a valid member of the team.

Haeji: What do you think the John has gained/learnt from her experience?
Hannah: I feel that John has improved on communication with the young people and his confidence levels are much higher. The experience of working in clubs is also helping John with future challenges.

Haeji: How would your service manage without volunteers?
Hannah: Volunteers are an integral part of this organization and in some cases over 50% of our staff are in fact volunteers so if we didn’t have them certain activities/services would not be available.
