Seminar: Attachment in the Classroom with Dr Heather Geddes

This seminar will explore the links between children's early experience, their emotional well-being and their performance in school. It will be of great interest to teachers, counsellors, therapists and all those working with children. Specifically, the seminar will address such issues as:

  • Attachment theory as a framework for understanding social and emotional development
  • Behaviour as communication
  • Patterns of behaviour and how they affect learning
  • School as a secure base
  • Ways to support those working with children in schools

There will be an opportunity for discussion and reference to clinical work.

Dr Heather Geddes is a qualfied teacher and Educational Psychotherapist who undertakes training and consultation with teachers and educational staff. Dr Geddes completed her PhD thesis on attachment behaviour in relation to responses to the teacher and the learning task. She works privately as a therapist, supervisor and trainer and contributes to the MA Training in Educational Psychotherapay at the Caspari Foundation. Her book 'Attachment in the Classroom' was published in 2006 and signed copies will be on sale on the day.

Our services are:

Impartial: We offer a range of support services to help young people aged 13-25 which are free.
Friendly: We have a team of staff and volunteers who can offer information, advice, practical help and support.
Confidential: We will not pass on any information about you without your permission (unless we believe that you are at risk of harm, or someone else could be)

The Safe + Sorted Youth Advice Centre offers information, advice, support and guidance to young people (13-25 years), which is free and confidential. Workers are on hand to offer a safe and private space to talk, and specialists are around on certain days too if needed.

Monday- Friday at 1.00pm-6.00pm

Our advisors can help with any issue at any time but we also have specialist advisors on the following days for:

  • Monday: Housing Advice
  • Tuesday: Health
  • Wednesday: Sexual Health
  • Thursday: Training and Employment
  • Friday: Substance Misuse

A Day in the Life of a Fridge

A partnership with the Youth Offending Team has resulted in training and work experience opportunities for over 100 young people, giving them their first taste of paid employment. Also, in partnership with Working Links, a number of adults have gained on-the-job work experience, equipping them with new skills and confidence.

The KS4 Sports Leaders Programme offers young people the chance to learn invaluable skills in delivering sports sessions and taking responsibilty in a secure environment supervised by experienced coaches. This programme, provided by Sussex Central YMCA, is adninistered by the KS4 Engagement team at the Kings House and young people are referred from local schools to take part.

We are an accrediated centre delivering a range of sport leader UK sport leadership award programme.
