Youth Programmes and Activities: Supporting Young People

The YMCA has a long history of supporting young people through activities, programmes, and mentoring. Beyond traditional gym facilities, we offer diverse opportunities designed to build confidence, develop skills, and create positive community connections.

Youth sports programmes are a cornerstone of YMCA work. These go beyond casual fitness to include structured coaching in various sports. Whether it's basketball, badminton, football, or swimming, young people receive qualified instruction and the chance to progress through recognised levels.

Beyond sports, many YMCAs run creative and social programmes. These might include arts and crafts sessions, music workshops, drama classes, or digital skills training. These activities engage young people's interests while building confidence and self-expression.

Leadership development is another key focus. Young people can participate in volunteer training, become activity leaders, or take on roles helping others. This builds valuable experience, improves CVs, and gives young people a sense of purpose and responsibility.

Mental health and wellbeing support is increasingly important. Many YMCAs offer peer support groups, counselling services, or wellbeing workshops for young people. These create safe spaces to discuss challenges and build coping strategies.

Residential trips and camps are popular YMCA activities. These overnight experiences build friendships, challenge young people outside their comfort zones, and create lasting memories. Trips might focus on outdoor adventure, team-building, or cultural experiences.

Youth employment support: Some YMCAs offer CV workshops, interview training, and job placement support. These services help young people prepare for work and access employment opportunities.

Holiday clubs and school holiday programmes keep young people engaged during breaks from school. These are often affordable for families and provide safe, stimulating activities with qualified staff.

Many youth programmes are subsidised or free for young people from low-income families, ensuring that cost isn't a barrier to participation. YMCAs work with schools, youth services, and community organisations to reach young people who might benefit most from support.

The YMCA believes in the potential of every young person. Our programmes create spaces where young people feel valued, can develop skills, and build positive relationships with peers and adults.
